A WOMAN has celebrated her 100th birthday with a visit from the deputy town mayor.

Doris Thomas, who lives in Morel Court care home in Raisdale Road, Penarth, turned 100 on February 28.

Deputy town mayor, Cllr Tracey Alexander came to visit her and share tea and cake on Ms Thomas' special day.

She lived in St Athan all her life and had one son Gareth who now lives in America with his wife and they visit her often.

She also received a card from The Queen on the occasion of her 100th birthday.

She said she came to Morel Court to retire but now does more than she ever did.

"I have made lots of friends and feel I have an extended family which is very nice," she said.

"All at Morel Court are very nice and it’s a lovely home to live in.

"I could not ask for anywhere nicer to live.

"I never thought I would reach 100.

"The secret is a glass of sherry and a game of bingo once a week."
