LIFEBOAT crews were called out on Mothering Sunday to rescue people trapped on Sully Island.

Shortly after 4pm on Sunday (March 26) crews from Penarth RNLI got the call.

One person attempted to return to the mainland but was turned back by concerned onlookers as the causeway had already flooded and two picnickers were unaware that the tide had cut them off from the mainland.

All three were returned to the mainland by the D class lifeboat where they were met by Penarth's coastguard rescue team and given safety advice.

Jason Dunlop, Penarth RNLI lifeboat operations manager, said: "We would always urge people visit Sully Island to be aware of tide times and follow the instructions on the traffic lights.

"Anyone finding themselves cut off should not try to return to the mainland but should call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
