A CAMPAIGN group has added its voice to concerns over pollution on a main road.

The Dinas Powys Bypass Group say that child health is being put at risk by pollution levels near a village school.

It follows other recent tests by Friends of the Earth campaigners on the same road, and in Windsor Road, Cogan - as reported by the Penarth Times last week.

A recent national survey said that 2,091 schools and nurseries are within 150 yards of a road with dangerous amounts of nitrogen dioxide.

But the bypass group say the main A4055 Cardiff to Barry Road is less than five yards from the Dinas Powys school playground and that increases in traffic could make it worse still.

The group also say the latest recorded emissions at the site are 29 micrograms per cubic metre of air at the traffic lights on the junction between Cardiff Road and Murch Road.

The legal EU limit is 40 micrograms per cubic metre of air.

Rob Crowley, a member of the group, and a candidate for Dinas Powys on the Vale council and the Twyn ward on Dinas Powys Community Council.

He said: "The health of our children and grandchildren at the Dinas Powys Primary School is daily being put at increasing risk of nitrogen dioxide poisoning from diesel vehicles.

"Yet the Vale council don’t seem to have any plans in place to do anything about it."

The Vale council said it recognises its statutory duty to manage local air quality and it undertakes regular monitoring at specific locations across the Vale to check quantities of harmful emissions remain at an acceptable level.
