A DINAS Powys man has begun an epic 1,100 mile solo cycling challenge in aid of charity.

Antony Jarvis, 56, if cycling from the home of Ty Hapus, an early onset Alzheimer’s respite project in Barry, to Barcelona.

He set off on Monday (July 24) and plans to arrive in Barcelona on Friday, August 4 having covered 100 miles a day for 11 days.

The chartered management accountant and dad of three is a keen cyclist and has previously undertaken numerous charity rides covering more than 2,000 miles.

Not deterred by two accidents, one of which resulted in Mr Jarvis receiving extensive plastic surgery, he has now set himself his biggest challenge to date.

He said: "I cycled from Lands’ End to John O’Groats in 2010 and it rained eight out of the ten days, so I have decided to ride to Barcelona as it’s similar in distance, but will hopefully be better weather.

"I visited Barcelona in 2014 for a weekend, but it wasn’t long enough, so I promised myself a return trip. Little did I think I’d be arriving by bike.

"A significant aspect of this trip isn’t the cycling 100 miles a day for 11 days, although that is going to be physically demanding, it’s going to be the fact that I will be going solo. It’s lucky that I enjoy my own company

"I have had a couple of accidents on my bike, but cycling is a passion that I just can’t give up. Doing something I love while raising money for a great charity such as Ty Hapus makes it even more rewarding."

Ty Hapus is a unique daytime respite project that supports families struggling with the effects of early onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Working closely with the Alzheimer’s Society, the dedicated and specially trained team at Ty Hapus provide a stimulating and interesting day at the project for guests suffering with the disease, while allowing their carers to have much needed break.
