UNEMPLOYMENT has fallen by one per cent year on year in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Figures released by the Department of Work and Pensions showed that the claimant count in the region had fallen by 20 since this time last year to 1375.

Youth unemployment in the Vale, which covers those aged 18-24 years old, fell by 50 (15 per cent) to its current level of 375.

Job centre manager Darren Gibson said the trend is still going downwards.

“I think we will see it incrementally slow down because we are dealing with more complex cases in terms of job seekers.”

He added that, across the UK, unemployment is at its lowest level since 2010 with more than three million people more in work.

“It is a good picture,” said Mr Gibbon.

Mr Gibbon said the Department of Work and Pensions is undertaking a campaign called Bags Full of Jobs this September which will involve local employer engagement.

One of the major events coming up in south Wales is the jobs fair in St David’s Hall in Cardiff which Mr Gibbon said would be of interest to job seekers in the Vale of Glamorgan.

More than 40 employers will be present at the event on September 6 including those from industries such as retail, care, the armed forces, cleaning and education.

“We would love people to attend. We strongly recommend that they do,” he said.

“They can network and get handy tips.

“There is a huge amount going on around the area including with Cardiff Bus, Toys ‘R’ Us, Costa Coffee and nursing homes.”

He said the main advice to job seekers would be to speak to their work coach.

“They are very skilled and knowledgeable.

“I would urge people to set themselves goals and objectives.

“Stick to a plan and ask your job coach questions as well.”
