FRUSTRATION has been expressed about a delay in painting double yellow lines near a village’s main shopping area.

Plaid Cymru community councillors in Dinas Powys have said that residents are baffled by the delay in tackling the issues near the Valley View shops in Castle Drive.

They say the shops have seen increased footfall in recent years and that resulting traffic issues have become a cause for concern

Following a campaign, the council agreed to impose parking restrictions in the area which would include the painting of double yellow lines.

But Cllr Geoff Cox, Vale of Glamorgan Council cabinet member for neighbourhood services and transport, said: “The variable and wet weather has delayed the painting of these lines as the work cannot be carried out on a damp surface.

“This work has now been prioritised and will be completed in the next week.”

Plaid Councillor Richard Grigg said that current situation was dangerous with vehicles reversing toward parked cars.

In addition he said the parking narrows the roads to such an extent that it creates a frustrating bottleneck.

Fellow Plaid councillor Chris Franks said: “It is very annoying that the promised yellow lines have not been laid down. All the legal requirements have been completed and promises made months ago. These are important safety measures. Since the Conservatives gained control of the Vale council we have seen no action at all.”

The busy row of shops include two takeaways including a fish and chip shop, a popular fruit and veg shop, a Tesco, a school uniform shop and a newsagent.

Cllr Keith Hatton said: “This has been a long struggle. We have now been given a commitment that the lines will shortly be provided.

“In many areas similar local centres are in decline. This is not the case in Dinas Powys.

“Plaid wants to know why the Conservative council is ignoring Dinas Powys.”
