MORE than 100 people raised £1,000 by climbing Pen y Fan in memory of a Dinas Powys woman.

Teresa Mitchell died from cancer in July aged 37 and the funds raised will go to the initwithyou charity which helps the children she worked with as a learning support assistant at Ysgol y Deri in Penarth.

On September 2, initwithyou joined friends, family and colleagues to walk, run or crawl their way to the top of Pen y Fan.

In November 2016, Mrs Mitchell was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer, a terminal illness with a short life expectancy.

She and her husband Paul were devastated by the news but vowed to fight it together.

She had to stay off work but during an appointment at Llandough Hospital in April 2017 she was told that the tumour had almost vanished. However, shortly after, it was discovered that the tumour had grown back.

She was admitted to Marie-Curie’s Holme Towers and died a few days later.

Before she died, she said she was deeply upset she couldn’t work in the job she loved any longer so a group of friends came up with initwithyou to show their solidarity.

They put together a fundraising group which raised more than £1,800 to support the family.

Mrs Mitchell’s wish was that this group be turned into a registered charity and all future donations to go directly to those children she worked with.

She saw that they needed things to help improve their quality of life; an eye gaze to help with communication, clothing, regulating equipment and warm food in school holidays.

Mr Mitchell said he and their two children Rianna and Jamie had been “overwhelmed” by the support they had received.

“I can’t thank the people who gave up their time to come and walk up Pen y Fan enough,” he said.

“We know how proud Teresa would be and how much these funds benefit the children who need it the most.

“We would love to see Penarth Times readers at one of our events.”

The next event on November 17 will be a five mile fairy light night walk starting at Cogan railway station at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5 per adult and £2.50 for children and can be purchased on the evening.
