A YOUNG singer songwriter from Penarth is set to perform at an event as part of the RNLI's fashion week in the town.

Maddy Carver, 16, will perform at the event at Blue Hair Design and the after party at Willmore's 1938 on Thursday, October 12.

She has a growing following both locally and further afield.

During the summer, she was spotted busking in Tenby and was invited to perform at Tenby Arts Festival at the end of this month.

In October Maddy will be appearing as guest on Pembrokeshire Radio, discussing her music and singing some of her original songs. Shortly after she’s hoping to impress the judges at the second round of the Open Mic UK competition in Bristol.

Speaking about performing at the RNLI Fashion Week event, she said: "The RNLI is an extraordinary voluntary emergency service. "When I was younger, I ran a lifeboat lemonade stall with my brother and sister to raise money for them.

"It’s great to be able to use my passion for music to help out in a small way again."

At the fundraiser Maddy will be playing a mixture of her own songs and a wide range of popular acoustic cover versions from the Stranglers to Justin Bieber.

She writes and performs her own indie/pop/rock songs.

“I’m working on an Artist Development programme at the same studio that developed Birdy when she was younger which is very exciting," she said.

Maddy says she’s keen to try out new styles and genres as she develops her unique musical identity; her musical interests are certainly eclectic.

Recently she’s been collaborating with a punk band and she’s also been a member of Welsh National Opera's Youth Opera for seven years.

"I love creating a rock version of a classical song or using a beautiful melody to tell a terrible story," she added.

"I’ve always loved the way the way music taps directly into your emotions and connects you to other people.

"Time stands still when I’m writing and composing. If I’m not composing, collaborating and singing I’m not me."

Maddy regularly plays with other musicians at open mic nights in the Vale and performs at venues and parties as part of an acoustic duo with Barry musician, Davey Sheppard.
