PEN-Y-GARTH Primary School in Penarth have held an open afternoon to celebrate their adoption of the Welsh language charter.

The purpose of the charter is to ensure that schools across Wales are preparing young people to have the confidence to use the Welsh language in a practical way, beyond it being confined to the classroom. Staff and governors at Pen-y-Garth school hope that by adopting the charter, it will inspire the children to use the Welsh language in every aspect of their lives.

Head teacher Mrs Edwards said: "The launch of the Welsh language charter was an excellent way of raising parents and children’s awareness of the wealth of opportunities available through the medium of Welsh in the community as well as later in their careers.

"Dwy iaith, dwywaith y dewis! Two languages double your opportunities in the world of work."

During the launch, parents were invited to experience Welsh activities and organisations available in the local community, which provide opportunities for pupils to develop their Welsh language skills.

Popular appearances were made by Seren and Sbarc, the official Welsh language charter mascots, while guests enjoyed a stunning performance of Welsh songs sung by the school choir.

Also in attendance were members of the Welsh Rugby Union, who kindly set up a series of rugby taster sessions for the children, and the Urdd, who helped pupils develop their footballing skills.

The special guest in attendance was Jess Kavanagh Williams, Scarlets winger and member of the Wales Women's 2017 Six Nations Rugby Union team. Pen-y-Garth Primary school wishes to express its gratitude to all who were involved in the success of the launch.
