BURIAL plots at a Barry cemetery will have their 'garden areas', used for bedding plants and flower containers, extended.

Barry Town Council said that the previous size limit of 18" by 36" was already being exceeded on many plots at Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery and that it was in the best interests of working with visitors to expand the permitted size.

Deed owners will now be allowed 22" by 36" in which to plant flowers.

Under the cemetery's rules and regulations, no kerbs, border stones, fencing, shrubs, rose bushes or any other obstructions are allowed on the surface of graves, while glass and ceramic containers are also not permitted.

Cemetery staff have identified that even with this increase in the limit, graves in sections DD, FF, MM, Y, W, X and Z all continue to exceed this.

The council ask that owners of plots in these sections abide by the new rules and make arrangements to remove any additional items.
