MORE than 100 people attended an open air carol concert in the heart of Dinas Powys last week.

Community councillors suggested hosting the event in the Twyn in the centre of the village on Friday (December 15).

The Dinas Powys Ecumenical Seven provided the big band sound and members of the cast of Bethesda Concert were also in attendance.

Cllr Chris Franks said@ "When we started the planning we had been slightly anxious but in the end there was great support from the community.

"We were delighted that at the start of the carols more than 100 people gathered by the community council Christmas tree.

"There have been calls for the carol evening to become an annual event and so we will see what can be done."

The chair of the community council cllr Andy Robertson thanked everyone for attending and said such community events continue to be important.

Many traditional carols were sung including Silent Night, We Three Kings and While Sheppard’s Watched their Flocks by Night.

Mark Thompson led the singing and invited youngsters to form an impromptu orchestra performing a version of Jingle Bells.

Cllr John Fanshaw who had co-ordinated the event thanked everyone who generously offered donations to Dinas Powys Voluntary Concern.

More than £75 was raised for DPVC to help alleviate loneliness and isolation amongst local elderly residents.

Cllr Richard Grigg helped give out the song sheets and retrieved them at the end of the concert.
