A PENARTH sea cadet has been honoured for his dedication and commitment at The Queen's Lord Lieutenant awards ceremony

Matthew Staite, 16, was praised by The Queen’s representative for South Glamorgan, Morfudd Meredith who said he has ‘the very best dedication and commitment’ and honoured his work in the local community.

Mrs Meredith was speaking at her annual annual awards ceremony, where she singled out 11 members of the armed forces community for their outstanding achievements over the last year.

She said: “Tonight presents the opportunity to recognise the excellent work of the reserves forces and cadets in South Glamorgan. The occasion demonstrates the very best dedication and commitment by those who serve in the reserve forces and cadet families.”

“The cadets are inspirational organisations. The programme of military themed training, youth work, civilian qualifications and community work assists young people to develop, progress and prepare for their future careers and adulthood. These young people are our future and their cadet experiences help them realise their full potential. They are role models for other young people.”

Matthew’s achievements include engineering qualifications and they have stood him in good stead to join the Lord-Lieutenant at official engagements. These occasions will include Royal visits and Remembrance services as the country marks the centenary of the First World War’s end.

Almost 100 people attended the event at Ty Walter Cleall in Cardiff, which is a special occasion in the calendar of the organisers, the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association (RFCA) for Wales.

Colonel Nick Beard, chief executive of RFCA for Wales, said: “Tonight’s award winners demonstrate why we are so proud to be the enabling voice for reserves and cadets in Wales, a role we have held for over 100 years.

“There are more than 2,200 Reservists in Wales, who are vital and valued members of the Defence family. This helps them to gain transferable skills to boost their civilian lives.

“The strength of the armed forces community is further strengthened by the 4,400 Cadets in Wales and the 1,200 volunteers. In all cases, they gain life changing experiences and valuable development opportunities, which has been shown tonight.”
