THIS week’s nostalgia photo in our ‘From the archive’ section looks back to Penarth in 1923.
This picture – of the spectacular views from Penarth Head – was hand-coloured and turned into a postcard by Murrell’s Printers and Stationers, where it was produced at their home in Royal Buildings, Penarth.
In the picture, a paddling pool can be faintly made out on the beach, while the pier’s original wooden pavilion jetted out into the sea.
The wooden pavilion was replaced in 1930 by a concrete structure, which itself has been replaced on several occasions since.
Another feature that has long since departed Penarth is the Penarth Cement Works, which can be seen in the distance. The cement works were closed down in 1970.
Many thanks to Philip Dawson from the ‘Images of Bygone Penarth’ Facebook page for supplying this image.
