TWO Penarth mum's are preparing to bring a worldwide movement to Penarth, by introducing a space where people can fix up items for free.

Katerina Stechman and Liz Clark are preparing to open a Repair Café in Penarth, following successful ventures across Cardiff.

Under the umbrella of Repair Café Wales, the aim is to divert useable items from waste dumps.

Ms Stechman said: "Once a month, residents bring their broken items along to volunteers who try and repair them.

"The Repair Café helps change people’s mind-set, makes them think again about action to avoid throwing things away and so can help us reduce landfill.

"Like other places, we do so much in Penarth to reuse items in our charity shops and recycle our waste.

"I think the community will readily embrace and delight in the idea of replicating what is already working in three other parts of Cardiff. Penarth will be a great addition to the Welsh cadre of Repair Cafes.

At the moment Mrs Stechman is speaking to the team at St Augustine's Parish Hall as a possible venue, and says she is hoping to run the first cafe on June 17 this year.

Ms Clark will be working on the social media side of the cafe ahead of the launch, with both on the look-out for any handy volunteers who could get involved.

Residents able to repair and fix clothing, bicycles, electrical appliances, furniture/wooden objects, toys, and PCs/laptops, among other items, will all be needed.

The Repair Café movement is thought to have begun began in Amsterdam in 2009.
