A PENARTH woman who wore her wedding dress to climb eight Welsh mountain peaks for charity has taken on her latest charity challenge.

Janine Osborne-Bowring, 35, took on the London Marathon last Sunday, the hottest ever on record with temperatures hitting a high of 24 degrees, beating the previous record of 22 degrees in 1996 and 2007.

Mrs Osborne-Bowring signed up to the race to raise money for Ovarian Cancer Action, after a decade of working alongside gynaecological surgeons as a theatre assistant.

She had raised £2,141 of her £2,500 target.

“I have seen the devastation this disease can cause and have also experienced it first hand with a very close friend being diagnosed but thank god she knew there was something wrong and her cancer was caught in time” said Mrs Osborne-Bowring.

“The heat was unbearable which made the running even more of a hell, but the love and support from my family, friends and all the amazing ladies I train got me through it.

"I just kept thinking this could save one of their lives, this is helping raise money for so many women.”

Cary Wakefield, Chief Executive of Ovarian Cancer Action, said: “We are so proud of our Team OCA runners, who have collectively raised over £55,000!

"The London Marathon is not just a 26.2 mile race, it is months of training and incredible fundraising.

"Here at Ovarian Cancer Action we are trying to raise £1 million to develop a screening tool to detect ovarian cancer, as there currently isn’t one.

"Early detection increases a woman’s chances of survival and the money raised by our amazing runners will help us save lives.”

Symptoms of ovarian cancer are often mistaken for symptoms of less serious conditions, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Regular experience of persistent stomach pain, persistent bloating, difficulty eating or feeling full more quickly, or needing to go to the toilet more frequently could be a symptom of ovarian cancer.

Ovarian Cancer Action is the UK’s ovarian cancer research charity and its mission is to fund research that saves lives.

There is still to sponsor Mrs Osborne-Bowring.
