TWO enterprising schoolgirls have launched a gift shop takeover in a creative bid to raise funds for the Penarth RNLI.

Sisters Poppy and Lily Scurlock, of Barry, engaged in a school summer holiday project and made children’s dresses and skirts which they have installed in Homemade Wales’ as the window display, in High Street, Barry.

Poppy, 10, and Lily, seven, both pupils at St Andrew’s Major C/W Primary School, in Dinas Powys, made 20 items for children, and 10 for dolls, to sell in aid of the charity.

The clothes took on a colourful coastal theme and the label has them branded as Sew Exciting.

Both have previously helped raise money for the Penarth RNLI with their mum's, Heather Scurlock, cousin connected to the cause.

The items, on display and for sale until Saturday, September 1, have already attracted attention with donations having been made; Barry RNLI inviting the girls to the Barry Island visitor centre, and Enfys craft fair offering them a place at their monthly stall.

Homemade Wales owner, Fay Blakeley said that a shop window was vitally important in the retail industry, but the youngsters had impressed her enough, with their professionalism, market research, and clothing quality.

Mrs Blakely said: “They did a lot of research beforehand and looked at other window displays.

“When they explained what they were doing I was so impressed that I offered to help them for a week.”

Mum, Mrs Scurlock added: “I’m very proud.”

The clothes are on sale, and RNLI donations can be made, at Homemade Wales, until Saturday, September 1.
