A CHARITABLE Penarth couple raised £1,500 for a local cancer hospice - by donating cash given to them as birthday and anniversary presents.
Jan and Pete Jones invited family and friends to a party to celebrate both Jan's 50th birthday and the couple's silver wedding anniversary - but asked guests to make a donation to Marie Curie Cancer Care (formerly Holme Tower) instead of buying gifts.
Mrs Jones said: "Pete lost both of his parents to cancer so we just wanted to raise some money.
"We liked the idea of donating our birthday and anniversary gifts to Marie Curie, and by throwing a party, something good came out of something good."
Marie Curie Cancer Care now has special envelopes to make it easier to donate money.
Karen Jones, fundraising manager at the hospice, said: "We really appreciate people thinking of us on their special occasions, and know that everyone feels that their money is being put to good use - rather than receiving gifts that sometimes are duplicated or put away in a cupboard!
"This donation from Jan and Pete will pay for 65 nursing hours of a patient with cancer.
"I know they felt really pleased that they chose to do this."
