VAUGHAN Gething will fight the Cardiff South and Penarth Constituency for Welsh Labour in the elections to the National Assembly for Wales in 2011.
Mr Gething was the first black President of NUS Wales and of the Wales TUC.
If elected in the elections of May 2011, he would be the first black constituency Assembly Member.
Selected at an all-members meeting, Mr Gething said: “It is a great honour to be selected by local Labour Party members to contest the Cardiff South and Penarth seat for the Welsh Assembly in 2011.
"This is a community I know well and I am looking forward to meeting with local residents, community groups and businesses in the election campaign which leads up to May, 2011."
The selection in Cardiff South and Penarth was prompted by the decision of Lorraine Barrett AM not to continue beyond this term of office.
Mrs Barrett said: “I am very pleased that members have voted for a candidate who I know will continue the Labour Party’s excellent work in Cardiff South and Penarth.
"This is an exciting and varied area and it is always a great pleasure to work for the local community. I am excited at being joined by Vaughan Gething in that task.
"Of course, I remain the Assembly Member until the next election and will continue to represent, and work for everyone in the constituency."
