Recycling scheme to be rolled out

THE Vale of Glamorgan Council's kitchen waste recycling scheme is to be extended to include a further 2,000 residents from Monday, July 13.

They join 5,000 residents who, based on their feedback within the pilot stage of the scheme and a Cabinet decision, now have the latest recycling scheme as a permanent arrangement.

Cabinet member for visible and building services, Cllr Geoff Cox, said: "We are delighted more residents will be on board this summer and we will shortly consider proposals to introduce the scheme Vale-wide.

"The waste management and cleansing team report they have already had requests from other householders as to when the scheme will come to their homes as they are keen to join and make a difference too."

The additional 2,000 residents will come from Dinas Powys (Monday collection), Barry Island and Suburbs (Tuesday collection), St Athan and Camp (Wednesday collection), Sully (Thursday collection) and Lavernock / Lower Penarth (Friday collection).

All residents are provided with a kerbside caddy, a kitchen caddy and a supply of small biodegradable corn-starched bags to line their kitchen caddy - with enough for three a week on average.

Kitchen waste will be collected weekly on allocated days, while black bag collections will be on alternate weeks.

The council plans to have a small team visit the latest participants to ensure they understand what is required and they will also be supplied with additional information.

Works manager Colin Smith adds: "On the whole, kitchen waste recycling is very popular and is easy to follow once underway.

"It is a great way to reduce scavenging animals that previously may have ripped open black bags, monitor how much food waste is created and it potentially allows residents to save money.

"We are pleased yet more flats and houses are joining the scheme, allowing them to recycle anything from food waste, to out-of-date food, right through to meat bones."

A survey conducted during the pilot scheme had a 43 per cent response rate with nearly 2,200 responses from approximately 5,000 households. Over 96 per cent of respondents thought that the kitchen waste caddy was either 'very easy' or 'quite easy' to use.

The Vale's recycling officer Michelle Fitzpatrick adds: "As ever, we are keen to get any feedback from additional participants. While we are not planning on sending out questionnaires, we would encourage feedback to be directed to our Contact OneVale call centre."
