PENARTH TIMES readers are being urged to pledge their support for the renovation of Penarth Pier Pavilion – and in doing so, help secure lottery funding!
Members of Penarth Arts & Crafts Ltd (PACL), the community organisation which manages the Washington Gallery, have launched a revised bid for funding under the slogan ‘Let’s Make It Happen’.
A website has been set up (www.letsmakeithappen.org.uk) that includes an online petition to help PACL officials monitor support for the scheme.
PACL will resubmit a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) on July 31 for half of the £4 million restoration costs.
PACL trustee, Robert Lloyd Griffiths, said: “It is so important that we can show how many people in the town actually support the project.
“If we can get a cross-section of people from Penarth to back the bid then it will really help when it comes to our resubmission to Heritage Lottery.
“More than 20,000 people live in Penarth and it would be great to get backing from everyone."
Plans for the 78-year-old Pavilion were first outlined in 2006 - but an initial bid for funding was turned down in January, leaving the renovation project – which includes a cinema, cafe, observatory and multipurpose community area – in doubt.
Mr Lloyd Griffiths, who is Regional Director for Wales for the Institute of Directors, added: “Everyone I speak to in Penarth is keen for the restoration to happen – we now need to turn that desire into action.
“Restoring the Pavilion will bring so many benefits to the town and will give the seafront a much-needed facelift.
“The Pavilion has been in its current state for the best part of eight decades.
"We must to take action to ensure it is fit for the next 80 years.”
*Petitions can also be found in the Penarth Times and the following shops and businesses in the town:
