Scout centre set for £128k makeover

A £128,974 grant will help transform a Scout activity centre in Penarth that is used by more than 350 youngsters.

Facilities at the Penarth & District Scout Council building, on Bedwas Place, will be updated thanks to funding from the Welsh Assembly Government.

The money comes as part of the £6.4million WAG Community Facilities and Activities scheme.

Elfed Avenue United Church will also benefit after being awarded more than £14,500 for repairs to a wall.

Work on the Scout activity centre includes refurbishment of the kitchen and toilet facilities, installation of shower cubicles, energy saving lighting and heating.

Barry Angus, secretary of the Penarth & District Scout Council, said: “The building hasn’t been refurbished since it was opened 20 years ago and has been in need of updating for some time.

“It is used by 350 scouts and by many more people from community groups across the Vale of Glamorgan.

“The grant is excellent news and will help improve facilities for everyone who uses the building.”

Refurbishment of the building is expected to start early next year.

Announcing the funding, Leighton Andrews, Deputy Minister for Regeneration, said: “The Community Facilities and Activities Programme can make a real, tangible difference to community and voluntary groups at grass roots level.

“Grants can range from a few thousand pounds to install a new heating system to much larger grants of several hundreds of thousands of pounds to build new facilities.

“Many of the projects from earlier grants have now come to fruition and have made a huge difference to the communities in which they are based,” he added.

“These facilities are so much more than mere bricks and mortar - they are at the very heart of our communities and help people, young and old, form new friendships, get involved in social activities and build healthier, happier lives.”
