WORK on a new one-way system and extra parking is set to start in Penarth town centre this month.

Due for completion before the end of March, the scheme involves creating a one-way system between Windsor Road and Plassey Street, with Arcot Street one-way northbound and Glebe Street one-way southbound. More regulated parking bays will be provided, with those in streets nearest the town centre being subject to limited waiting of one hour and other nearby streets to a two-hour limit.

The scheme will also include a lane specifically for cyclists to travel in both directions along Arcot Street, and pedestrian safety on Windsor Road will be improved by replacing the two zebra crossings with Puffin crossings.

The crossing near the junction of Hickman Road and Arcot Street will be relocated close to Glebe Street which will also be the location for a seating area and planting tub.

Cllr Geoff Cox, Vale of Glamorgan Council cabinet member for visible and building services, said: "I feel sure the traffic management measures and on-street car parking will, without doubt, assist residents, traders and visitors.

"I am pleased that this scheme, which when completed will have been designed, project managed and constructed by my officers in Visible Services, has eventually come to fruition.

"I apologise for any delays and inconvenience which may occur during the construction phase of the project but I can assure the public that these will be kept to the absolute minimum."

The plans are on display in the council's Renewal Area Offices at 88 Glebe Street.

The office is open to the public from 10am to 1pm (Monday to Thursday) and 10am to noon on Fridays.
