WORK on the new one-way system in Penarth town centre got under way last week - with Vale Council officials saying the scheme will be completed in March.

The project involves creating a one-way system between Windsor Road and Plassey Street, with Arcot Street one-way northbound and Glebe Street one-way southbound. More regulated parking bays will also be provided, with those in streets nearest the town centre being subject to limited waiting of one hour, and other nearby streets to a two-hour limit.

Paul Gay, Vale operational manager for engineering design and procurement, said: "Works started on January 18, on the northern limits of the scheme along Plassey Street.

“The next significant events will be works to make Arcot Street one-way, which are planned to start on February 2, followed by works to make Glebe Street one-way on March 11.

“However, these dates are provisional and depend on the contractors’ programme, resources and the weather.”

The scheme will also include a lane specifically for cyclists to travel in both directions along Arcot Street, and pedestrian safety on Windsor Road will be improved by replacing the two zebra crossings with Puffin crossings.

The crossing near the junction of Hickman Road and Arcot Street will be relocated close to Glebe Street, which will also be the location for a seating area and planting tub.

Vale Council cabinet member for visible and building services, Cllr Geoff Cox, said: "I apologise for any delays and inconvenience which may occur during the construction phase of the project, but I can assure the public that these will be kept to the absolute minimum."
