ON Friday, January 29, Tommy Owen – who recently retired as steward from Penarth Athletic Club – was greeted by members from all the sections representing rugby, cricket, hockey and lacrosse.
The committee and members of Penarth Athletic Club turned out in force to say a big thank you to Tommy, who had been looking after the club as steward for over ten years before deciding to call it a day.
Although officially the steward, over the years Tommy had also been mentor and friend to many youngsters involved in sport, and his inimitable style of guidance ensured that discipline ensued.
He also found time to look after financial matters as treasurer of the mini rugby section.
His involvement did not end with his official duties and he was very much a part of club activities - always ready to help, Tommy could be relied upon, a trait developed from early years in the Valleys followed by National Service.
His commitment to the club could not be questioned and his contribution was incalculable.
The esteem and respect that members have for Tommy was outlined by club president Graham Crimp, who was delighted to have the opportunity to thank him and, on behalf of the Committee and members, he presented Tommy with a watch suitably engraved as a token of appreciation.
