Boost for St Cyres school plan

AMBITIOUS plans for a major new school development in Penarth have received a boost with the announcement by the Welsh Assembly Government that the project has been approved in principle.

The Penarth Learning Community will provide a new school for St Cyres on a single site - it currently operates from two sites in Penarth and Dinas Powys - and the amalgamation of three special schools into one school on the same site.

Maes Dyfan in Barry will be part of the multi-million pound complex together with Penarth special schools Ashgrove and Ysgol Erwr Delyn.

The Welsh Assembly Government recently announced £144.8m worth of investment in school buildings - of which £57.3m is expected to be spent on the Penarth Learning Community.

Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet member for education and lifelong learning, Cllr Tony Hampton, said: “We are currently in discussion with the Assembly over the finer details of the funding package including the critical issue of when the funding will be made available.

“We are very keen to progress the learning community, not only will it provide much needed new accommodation for St Cyres and special education needs pupils, the project is a groundbreaking initiative that we think will influence the design of other education centres.

“We will be celebrating the opening of our new Cowbridge Comprehensive in September and we want to see Penarth’s new school centre opening as soon as possible.”

Consultation on the scheme is currently underway and an outline design and cost plan is now expected to go to tender.
