A FUNDRAISER is once again preparing to dive into the icy waters of the Bristol Channel, as he attempts to swim from Penarth to Weston-Super-Mare for a good cause.
Gethin Jones, from Swansea, has become renowned for his charity challenges after successfully swimming from Ilfracombe to Swansea Bay last year.
The 38-year-old will set off on his 32km swim from Penarth next Thursday (August 5), to raise money for Cieran Jones, a four-year-old from Port Talbot who has Cerebral Palsy.
Cieran’s family are raising money to pay for Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy treatment at the St Louis Children’s Hospital in America - where Dinas Powys youngster Elodie Wilton recently had an operation after Penarth Times readers helped raise more than £54,000 for her.
Gethin said: “Following the success of last year’s swim I wanted to find a local cause I could support, I asked for people to contact me and when I heard about young Cieran’s appeal I was eager to help.”
David Hughes took seven hours to swim across the Bristol Channel from Penarth Pier to Clevedon Pier last September.
David was joined by friends Phil Norton and Chris Gower-Jones, who were both pulled out of the water five hours and 9 miles into the swim.
Gethin will be swimming under strict Channel swimming rules, which means wearing just Speedos, goggles and a swim cap.
He won’t be allowed to touch the support boat for the duration of the swim and food will be handed to him to eat in the water.
