A ROYAL Navy Careers Advisor has watched his nephew from Penarth complete his basic training at HMS Raleigh - on the 30th anniversary of his own passing-out-parade.

Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Tim Street joined the Royal Navy in 1980.

And he was among the family and friends of 20-year-old trainee Able Rate (AB) Sam Green, who were invited to attend a ceremony at HMS Raleigh in Cornwall recently.

The parade marked the successful completion of nine weeks intensive training for AB Green and his fellow recruits.

CPO Street completed his own basic training on November 21, 1980. The 49-year-old went on to complete 22 years service, which included participation in the Falklands conflict of 1982 while serving onboard HMS Hermes.

He joined the Careers Service in 2002 and now works at the Armed Forces Careers Office in Cardiff.

AB Green, from Penarth, joined the Royal Navy on September 19, 2010.

The former pupil of Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg said: "I joined the Royal Navy because I thought the lifestyle would suit me. I liked the thought of seeing the world, while learning some valuable new skills."

With the first phase of his Royal Navy training complete, AB Green will transfer to HMS Collingwood in Hampshire. There he will learn skills to enable him to work at the heart of a ship's communications network, operating all the technology needed to communicate anything from battle orders to routine requests for supplies. Once this training is complete AB Green will be fully qualified as a Royal Navy Communication and Information Systems Specialist and ready to take his place at sea. CPO Street said: "I am very proud of Sam and pleased that I have inspired him to join the Royal Navy.

"I can still remember my own passing-out-parade and the relief at getting through my basic training. I'm sure Sam must feel the same way."
