THERE was drama of a different kind on Penarth's streets last week, as the cast and crew of Doctor Who returned to film in the town - much to the delight of local residents.

Matt Smith - in his second series playing the doctor - was a major draw for the crowd of spectators who stumbled across the scene at Church Road between Wednesday (March 9) and Saturday (March 12).

The Tardis took up its position, as filming took place on the corner of Windsor Terrace Lane, with the lane itself also used for a number of scenes.

A BBC press officer confirmed they were filming episode 12 of the new series, but would not give any storyline information.

Beth Fisher, a Church Road resident, said: “It’s really exciting.

“They were filming throughout the night using incredibly powerful lights – it was amazing to see it all live.”

Maria Lyons, of Windsor Terrace, took her young son to have a look.

“He's probably a bit young but maybe he’ll be a fan when he’s older and I’ll be able to tell him he was on set once!” she said.

“My nephews will be very jealous they didn’t get to see it.”

Meanwhile Nigel Furnley, of Porthcawl, who was visiting his parents for the day, said he stumbled across the scene by accident.

“My son's a fan so I promised I’d get him a photo,” he said.

“It’s amazing the amount of equipment and crew involved - you have no idea until you see it live.”

Gavin and Stacey star James Corden, was also seen on set.

The new series will be screened in the spring and autumn.
