GREEN-FINGERED members of Penarth-based community group Gwyrddio Penarth Greening (GPG) have been busy planting more trees at the Community Orchard in Cosmeston Lakes Park.

The group, who planted the orchard of traditional native fruit trees on December 31 last year, returned last Saturday (March 12), to plant an edible hedgerow along the boundary of the orchard.

The hedgerow consists of almost 400 trees and will form an attractive, wildlife-friendly perimeter to the orchard.

The trees are a mixture of Blackthorn, Crab Apple, Elder and others that will provide a source of edible fruits for people and wildlife.

The trees were provided by the Woodland Trust as part of the More Trees, More Good campaign. The Woodland Trust received more than 1,000 applications nationwide for community tree packs this spring, and as result more than 200,000 trees will be planted in hundreds of communities.

"Tree planting is a fantastic and fun way for us to do something lasting and beneficial in our local area," said Anthony Slaughter who organised the planting.

"We hope our trees will help attract wildlife and make a real difference to everyone who will see them."

Victoria Hodson from the Woodland Trust added: "We have been overwhelmed by people's enthusiasm to plant trees.

"Communities are transforming spaces within their neighbourhoods, growing their own fruits and food, creating shade and shelter, and providing new homes for wildlife.

"The UK is actually the least wooded country in Europe, with only about a quarter of the European average, so we are delighted that Gwyrddio Penarth Greening is helping reverse this trend.

"Applications for free packs to plant this autumn can be found on our website, along with lots of advice to help people get started."
