CHANGES look set to be made at Cosmeston Medieval Village which the Vale Council says will save more than £60,000, although it would mean the loss of some staff.

Cabinet member for leisure and tourism, Councillor Anthony Ernest said: “Changes to Cosmeston Medieval Village were identified as part of proposed savings agreed by the Council at the end of February.

“The proposal is to open the village up as free entry rather than charged for entry, so it becomes part of the park.

“Visitors would be able to have an electronic audio wand at a charge or can wander around the village for free if they want to," he added.

“This will increase access and due to the staff needed to run it, would result in £60,000 of savings per year.”

The plans would see some staff at the village released.

"The current proposal would involve cutting staff, but this is subject to formal consultation and a final decision,” Cllr Ernest said.

“But no decision has been taken as yet and we will shortly be consulting on this proposal."

If approved, the plan would also see an end to the popular family events and shows held throughout the year, unless outside help is provided.

"In the proposed model, events would go ahead if a third party organisation is willing to work in partnership with the Council," added Cllr Ernest.

Local resident Osman Carne called it 'a shame'.

“It’s suprising because the events are very popular,” he said.
