COMMUNITY gardens in Penarth have been given a cash boost from the Co-operative Society.

Local environment group Gwyrddio Penarth Greening (GPG) were presented with a cheque for £2,480 from Philip Rapier, Committee Board member of the Co-op, at a recent GPG meeting.

Nonn Vaughan, the scheme’s co-ordinator, said the donation had given the volunteers a lot of encouragement.

"For some time GPG has been planning to create a number of community gardens around Penarth, as part of its overall aim to involve more people in growing for food and for pleasure," she said.

"There are community gardens all over the UK now and they really do work, but before even a carrot is planted, a lot of planning, consultation and initial work has to be done. "This money has come at just the right time and it will ensure that whatever projects are chosen by the community, we will be able to do the appropriate goundwork and get them off to a really good start.

"We are over the moon with the help we have received from the Co-op."
