Penarth pub renovation project: The New Pilot to open in September

ONE of Penarth's most popular pubs is to be re-opened by a South Wales-based food company following an 'extensive renovation project'.

Knife and Fork Food has leased The Pilot, overlooking Penarth Marina and Cardiff Bay, on a 20-year contract from SA Brains.

The company, launched in 2008, hope to transform The Pilot in line with the success of its Pontcanna pub, The Conway - a recent entrant in the Michelin Guide.

Calling it The new Pilot, 12 new jobs are expected to created - five in the kitchen and seven at front of house - when the traditional pub is re-opened on September 1.

Martin White, sous chef at The Conway, has been appointed head chef. Knife and Fork Food's other operations include Woods Brasserie in Cardiff Bay, and The Old Swan Inn in Llantwit Major.

Executive Chef of the Knife & Fork group, Stefan Nilsson, will chalk up locally grown, seasonal produce on the blackboard menu, and introduce favourites from the menu at The Conway.

And the Conway's 'cult' quiz night will also be coming to Penarth, as well as several themed evenings.

Knife & Fork Food Managing Director Sean Murphy said: "Penarth has always had a wonderful community feel and this is something that was hugely attractive to us.

"There is a great buzz around the town, and a sense that it is an area that is very much on the up - we wanted to be a part of that, in among the chimney pots, right in the heart of things.

"When we found The Pilot, with its amazing location and incredible views, it was an opportunity that was too good to pass up.

"The Pilot's traditional feel will be retained, but it will very much be a pub for today," he added.

"We are intent on rolling out our core concept of good food, good wine and a great atmosphere that everyone can feel comfortable in."
