Penarth Petanque Club: Colin Ballett Doubles 2012
8:50am Wednesday 5th September 2012 in News
A HARD-FOUGHT final involving former Penarth president Tony Smith and his partner Dave Elston, and their opponents John Barnes and Roger Griffin, capped an enthralling day of skilful pétanque at Penarth Petanque Club at the Kymin, Penarth on August 12.
Smith and Ellison eventually triumphed 13-12 to take the Colin Ballet memorial trophy.
Husband and wife team Geoff and Cath Jones took the plate final 13-7 against John Thorne and Pauline Thorne. Prizes were presented by Simone Ballet, whose husband Colin Ballett the competition commemorates.
It proved to be an intriguing day of high quality pétanque as the piste got faster and faster as it dried in the afternoon sun, leading to some interesting pointing techniques.
No pair dominated the morning round-robin session in which three rounds were played – all the teams tasted defeat at some point – with the final groupings worked out on points difference.
But the real winner was the game of pétanque which continues to thrive in Penarth. The club meets each Sunday at 11am at the Kymin and visitors and new members are welcome.
