Stanwell GCSE students' 'outstanding achievements'

STANWELL School enjoyed ‘outstanding achievements’ at GCSE on Thursday last week (August 23).

A record number of 264 Year 11 pupils achieved five or more level 2 passes (92 per cent), with the average points per pupil of 589 equivalent to over 10 A* grades for every pupil in the year group.

The percentage of A* grades achieved by pupils rose this year by 16 per cent and overall more than 1,350 entries (38 per cent of all entries) were graded A* or A.

Year 11 tutor Barry Crompton said: “It is a delight to see the hard work of the pupils, and support given by parents and staff, being rewarded - with so many students achieving their potential and obtaining high grades.”

Success was widespread across the curriculum, with A* and A grades exceeding 30 per cent of the entry for 17 departments. Particularly pleased were the Head of Religious Studies and the Head of Mathematics, with 93 and 77 A* grades respectively.

Equally impressive were the achievements of pupils who studied vocational qualifications in partnership with Cardiff and the Vale and the Military Preparation Colleges.

Among the school's high achievers were Eve Carter and Emma Hughes who each scored 14 A* grades.

Eve, 16, will study physics, chemistry, maths and history at Stanwell next year, and said: “I’m really happy. I didn't expect to do so well!”

Emma is staying on to study five subjects at A level, including maths and further maths, and said: “I'm ecstatic, and still in shock I think!”

Also celebrating was Tomos Davies, who will study chemistry, physics, maths and biology next year after he achieved 14 A* grades and one A.

“I was worrying and had quite a sleepless night - although it turned out there was no need!" he said.

Year 11 head of year Leeann Bekker said she was 'immensely proud' of the group as a whole.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better year group. The results are just unbelievable, and they deserve it for the hard work they have each put in,” she said.

Assistant headteacher, James Mansfield, was especially pleased to see high numbers of pupils achieving the required grades to follow their chosen subjects in the sixth form.

He said: “Pupils worked with diligence and commitment in the lead-up to the examinations and the excellent results were well deserved.”

In total 67 pupils achieved 10 A grades or better, with the following pupils being awarded 11 A* grades or more:
