Penarth choreographer uses Olympic experience to start new class
9:00am Wednesday 10th October 2012 in News
A PENARTH choreographer who helped organise the official mascot dance at London 2012 is set to launch a contemporary dance class in Cogan.
Sarah Hudson, who graduated from Dartington College of Arts after leaving Stanwell School in 2009, created the Olympic dance routine with four London-based schools, before sending it out to thousands of schools across the country.
Working alongside choreographer William Todd-Jones, and in conjunction with LOCOG (The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games), she said the aim was to create a a sequence which all ages and abilities could perform.
"The project started at the English National Ballet studios in London where we started devising the sequence with the children," said Sarah, who was also the ballet choreographer for the UK school premier of The Phantom of the Opera at Stanwell school.
"This moved on to filming the sequence at the Picadilly Theatre in London's West End, where English National Ballet's principal dancer Begona Cao joined us and learnt the sequence with the children and the mascots.
"Mcfly's Tom Fletcher and his sister Carrie wrote and performed the song for the mascot dance, and in one session the children were able to meet and teach both Tom and Carrie the song.
"The children, the team and myself also worked, performed and taught hundreds of children and young athletes at the Olympic Stadium as part of Sainsbury's 2012 School Games."
Using the knowledge gained from the experience, combined with her formal training, Sarah has set up a dance class at 10 Harriet Street, Cogan (Emma Parker's dance studios), running Saturdays from October 20 to December 15.
"It will be a fast paced class, infusing styles and improving technique in a fun, creative, affordable environment." she said.
Classes will run from 2.30pm to 3.30pm and cost £4 per week. They are open to all ages with minimum 2 years experience.
