THE next meeting of the Penarth Aviation Society will be held on Friday, March 3, opening at 7.45pm for 8pm in the Penarth Conservative Club.

This month, society member John Andrew will be giving a talk entitled Russian Air Force Museum at Monino, Moscow 2007.

While on holiday in the former Soviet Union in 2007, John was able to visit the Russian Air Force Museum at Monino near Moscow.

The museum contains a wide range of military aircraft with just about every type used by the Soviet and Russian Air Forces since the end of the Second World War carefully displayed outside a couple of hangars which contain older types.

Starting with the MiG-15 which duelled with the Sabres of the US Air Force in the skies over Korea in the 1950s, these exhibits trace the development of Russian fighters and bombers on through the classic MiG-21 to the Su-35 Flanker and Tu-22 Backfire of today.

Alongside these mainstays of Russian air power are various experimental types which never entered production and can only be seen at this fascinating museum.

Regulars will remember John's talk on Australian Air museums and look forward to this peep behind the Iron Curtain.

Penarth Aviation Society meets on the first Friday of the month at the Penarth Conservative Club.

Visitors and potential members are welcome to attend a meeting to sample the hospitality.
