THERE was an air of glamour about Penarth lifeboat station recently, when cast members of the Penarth Music and Variety Company arrived at the station in a flurry of feathers, to promote their fundraising efforts for Penarth RNLI.
This year, the RNLI will benefit from funds raised at the second of two performances that Penarth Music and Variety Company will be staging at St David’s Hall in Cardiff.
Monday, December 7, will see members of Penarth RNLI’s fundraising branch attending the show, selling programmes and making a collection in aid of their charity.
"Every year, we choose two charities that we would like to raise money for," said Penarth Music and Variety Company secretary, Pam Bird.
"This year, we are pleased to be supporting Penarth RNLI, as well as Riding for the Disabled in Dinas Powys "We decided on Penarth RNLI because as local people, we’ve all seen the lifeboat being launched in sometimes dangerous conditions, and we wanted to donate to a very worthy local cause."
Philip Lay, Penarth Lifeboat Operations Manager, said: "We’re delighted to have been chosen as Penarth Music and Variety Company’s charity this year.
"Lifeboat stations throughout the country are run entirely by volunteers, and the money raised will be a very welcome contribution towards funding the training of our volunteers who give up their own time to save lives at sea."
For many years, Penarth Music and Variety Company has been raising money for worthy causes at its annual Christmas show.
Musical Director Ray Dibble has overseen the performances from their very early days in the Marina Ballroom on Penarth Pier, on to the Paget Rooms, then Penarth Leisure Centre, and finally, for more than 20 years, at Cardiff’s St David’s Hall.
This year’s performance promises a feast of festive fun with the theme of ‘Christmas Nostalgia’, and will feature song and dance routines from popular West End musicals including Half a Sixpence, Billy Elliott, Mama Mia and La Cage Aux Folles.
It culminates in a spectacular Dickensian Christmas finale, and costumes for this year’s show have been supplied by Script to Screen.
Performances are on Sunday, December 6 and Monday, December 7, at St David’s Hall, starting at 7.30pm.
Tickets at £13 and £15 are available from Helen Hudd on 029 2070 3906.
