A HOST of dignitaries helped unveil a plaque in Penarth Marina last week to mark the 150th anniversary of the death of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

The commemorative plaque, at the western (Penarth) end of the Cardiff Bay Barrage, was presented by the Chairman of the Institution of Civil Engineers Wales Cymru, Alun Griffiths OBE.

It also marks the last commercial voyage of Brunel’s ship - the "Great "Britain" - from Penarth in 1886.

Brunel had a long association with south Wales as engineer for the Taff Vale Railway and the south Wales Railway, as well as the Ely Valley Railway.

An ICE spokeswoman said: “The Institution sees this anniversary as an opportunity to commemorate Brunel’s connection with Cardiff and Penarth."
