Stanwell students clean up!

YEAR 10 pupils from Stanwell School have undertaken volunteering work as part of their BTEC course in Workskills.

Following a presentation at the school on volunteering, given by Rachel Oldman of the Vale Volunteer Bureau, the pupils volunteered to work with the Penarth Youth Project, Keep Wales Tidy and the Waste Management and Cleansing Department of the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

Denny White, the council’s senior enforcement officer, delivered a Health and Safety session to the pupils before they undertook the placement to make them aware of possible hazards and the safety equipment required. Pupils were then split into three groups.

The first group consisted of four pupils who visited the Penarth Youth Project and used their Literacy and ICT skills in assisting the project manager Tracey Downs. They were involved with producing a booklet to develop local health and well being activities, for the local community.

A dozen pupils, along with their teacher Mrs Macnamara and teaching assistant Miss Spear, supported Ian Harvey and the Keep Wales Tidy team. These pupils had responsibility for clearing litter from the old railway line footpath and around Cogan Leisure Centre.

A third group of pupils visited Barry Island with their teachers, Mr Deighton-Jones and Mrs Chellingworth. They worked with Denny White and Graham Hatter from the council’s Waste Management and Cleansing Department, clearing litter from around the Island.

"This has been an excellent opportunity for the students to develop their key skills of team working and communication, and to increase their self esteem and confidence by performing a worthwhile job that benefits the whole community," said Mr Deighton-Jones.

"The enthusiasm of the pupils and the positive responses they received from members of the public will hopefully encourage them to continue with volunteering work in the future."
