Bookie bandit's sentence appeal

THE 'bookie bandit' who robbed six South Wales betting shops at knifepoint - including Ladbrokes in Penarth - is to appeal against his 10-year jail sentence.

Stephen Morgan, of Fairwater, Cardiff, used a knife to hold up bookmakers in a string of raids and stole a total of £11,000.

The 43-year-old has now filed an appeal against the jail term handed down at Cardiff Crown Court in July.

The 10-year sentence for robbery with an offensive weapon went outside the normal sentencing guidelines, as Judge David Aubrey QC said the seriousness of the offences demanded a “substantial custodial sentence”.

The delivery driver, who raided Ladbrokes in Stanwell Road on January 18, committed the crimes because of gambling debts His case will be reviewed at Cardiff Crown Court on February 11.
