A NEW design team has been appointed for the Pavilion Pier project, as the bid to renovate the 80-year-old landmark gathers pace.
In November, Penarth Arts & Crafts Ltd (PACL), the organisation behind the restoration scheme, was awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) Wales grant of £99,600 to develop detailed plans for the multi-million pound facelift.
That funding was backed up by a sum of £800,000 from the Vale of Glamorgan Council.
PACL failed with an initial application to HLF Wales for up to 60 per cent of the refurbishment fund but November’s decision means the organisation can now work on submitting more detailed plans and apply for HLF support for the £3.9m project.
Plans for the iconic building include the development of cafe, observatory and multi-purpose community area.
To help drive the project forward a team of architects, quantity surveyors and engineers have now been appointed.
Niall Phillips, an architect with Bristol-based firm Purcell Miller Triton, will front the team.
Structural engineering firm Ove Arup, who has previously worked on the Pavilion for the Vale Council, have also been signed up together with John Rhoden, a mechanical, electrical engineer and environmental services representative.
Raymond Pye, of Hasps Term Partnership, will examine health and safety issues and Paul Rogers, from Penarth-based quantity surveyors Chandlers KBS, has also signed up.
Project Director Maggie Knight said: “The calibre of consultants now engaged on the design plans is extremely high.
“Work being immediately undertaken will be used to take the scheme to RIBA Stage D and planning permission, due for application in June.”
It is hoped a stage 2 application to secure the bulk of Heritage Lottery funding will be made in the autumn.
