PUPILS from Evenlode Primary School recently explored Penarth Pier Pavilion - and lent their support to the multi-million pound project aimed at renovating the famous landmark. The year six class was invited on a tour of the historic seafront building, which is scheduled to be refurbished once capital is secured via a successful Heritage Lottery Fund bid.
The tour was hosted by Penarth Arts & Crafts Limited (PACL), a local charity spearheading the effort to restore and revitalise the defunct pavilion.
Plans for the building include multi-purpose arts and learning spaces, as well as a restaurant, café, observatory and conference facilities.
The youngsters were invited to make suggestions of features they would like to see in the final design. Emphasis was placed on ideas that included environmentally sustainable power sources, an important part of the restoration vision. One student suggested a wide screen television powered by tidal energy.
Maggie Knight, Director of PACL, said: "Young people are an important stakeholder group in this project, and we want to ensure that they have input in its design and development."
The Penarth Pavilion project, working under the banner ‘Let’s Make it Happen’, envisages a state-of-the-art, flexible facility that aims to engage many different groups, including residents of Penarth, the wider South Wales region, Britain, and even visitors from around the globe. It will be a centre of excellence for environmental issues, maritime and social history, heritage, education and entertainment.
