LUCKY pupils from a Penarth primary school were given a real treat recently - when they met members of the Welsh international football team.

The Year 6 Evenlode pupils met players including Chris Gunter, Boaz Myhill and Cardiff City star Craig Bellamy, when they visited the Vale Resort days before Wales took on England in their European Championship Qualifier in Cardiff.

They were invited after 11-year-old pupil Ffion Blunsdon won a competition in partnership with the ‘Show Racism the Red Card in Wales’ initiative.

"The aim was to show harmony between different races," said Ffion, who won with an animated movie of an African wedding, featuring multi-cultural symbols.

"It was nice to win and I really enjoyed meeting the Welsh team."

The pupils also watched the team train ahead of their big match.

10-year-old Alex Whitfield also won a prize on the day for ‘best question to the players’.

"I asked them ‘how has working with the Show Racism the Red Card initiative changed your perception of racism?’," he said.

"They answered that while most of them were brought up in multi-cultural areas and have always been respectful of different races and religions, it has helped them get the message across to a wider audience.

"I was lucky enough to win Cardiff City tickets for that!"

Year 6 teacher Mrs Cunningham said: "A wonderful day was had by the children and we were delighted to be given the opportunity to meet the players."
