THE annual Richard Buckley Memorial Cup event took place on Cogan Rec on Saturday, with a crowd of spectators treated to a feast of exciting team challenges!

Contested by the Cogan Chiefs dressed as Gnomeo and Juliet, the Top House as Looney Tunes, Cogan Girls as a gang of nuns, and an Erw’r Delyn team sporting baby costumes, the games started with the egg-throwing and catching event.

Organiser Ian Buckley said: “It ended with a win for the Chiefs, and left three spectators with a scrambled egg hair cut!

“This was followed by the Cogan version of hammer hide and seek, which saw one member from each team blindfolded and attempting to break eggs secured to teammates' heads with sponge hammers.

"The nuns won this event, due in part to their ability to shout their instructions louder than both the load hailer and the crowd!"

Next came the obstacle race, which included a sack race, land ski, water-carry and a lot of obstruction, and ended in a close-fought win for Erw’r Delyn.

“The final game saw teams battle the mighty paca and a bungee rope, much to the entertainment of the crowd," added Ian.

“Despite several team members needing the kiss of life, due to excess ingestion of washing-up liquid, there was a sqeaky clean bubble-blowing victory for the Top House – rendering the whole event, yet again, an honourable draw!"

The team members and enthusiastic crowd then decamped to the Top House, to celebrate their sporting achievements and sing their hearts out to Jimmy’s Karaoke.

“All in all it was a fantastic occasion," added Ian.

"I would like to say a massive thank you to Sammy for the coconuts; Tony for arranging the rubbish retrieval; Richie for the bouncy castle; mum and dad for the weather; Tina and Tony from the Top House for the buffet, karaoke and all their hard work behind the bar; also Richie from the Top House; Green Watch Penarth Fire Station for their help and attendance; and everyone who turned up.”

Money raised from the event will be split between Ysgol Erw’r Delyn and the Firefighters Charity.
