PENARTH Pier Pavilion has received further funding from the Welsh Government towards improving the facility for use by the local community, it has been announced.
Penarth Arts and Crafts Ltd will receive £300,000 towards the restoration and refurbishment of the pier pavilion, as part of the Community Facilities and Activities Programme.
Pavilion Project Director Maggie Knight said: "We're thrilled to have this crucial support.
"We are grateful to the Welsh Government for its help to reopen a significant community asset, which aims also to tell the stories of the people who used the building in past decades".
Minister for Local Government and Communities Carl Sargeant said it was vital such schemes received the support they deserved.
"These grants are not simply about improving buildings," he said.
"Local clubs and centres can be the hub of the community where people, young and old, get together and enjoy social activities.
"Whether a small or large amount, CFAP funding has a beneficial impact upon Welsh communities and the day-to-day lives of local people.
"That’s why I’m pleased to see so many local groups and volunteers taking matters into their own hands and applying for grants to make their centre a better place for the whole community to enjoy."
Launched in 2002, the Community Facilities and Activities Programme has to date funded 825 projects totalling over £91 million. This latest bidding round will fund 15 projects totalling £2,581,304.46 over three financial years.
Cardiff South and Penarth Assembly Member Vaughan Gething welcomed the news.
"This funding will enable the Pavilion to become both a focal point for the community as well as a centre of excellence, covering environment, maritime and social history, heritage, education and entertainment," he said.
"The programme is not just about buildings. It’s about people, regenerating our towns and villages and restoring a sense of community spirit.
"The reopening of the Pier Pavilion will make a huge difference to Penarth and I hope it will kickstart further investment on the seafront."
