LES PUGH'S own Explorer Scouts enjoyed a night of sheer rubbish recently!

Each unit member brought to the meeting, in a carrier bag previously used, a load of rubbish that was destined for council collections.

The rubbish was piled high in the hall, resembling the tips where others less fortunate scavenge for a living.

The unit was split into teams and they had to provide clothing for themselves, made from whatever they could scavenge.

In the course of 90 minutes, hot water bottles became hats, straws became glasses, carrier bags became dresses, and boxes became shoes.

The finale saw a parade of the outfits (varied to say the least), with catlike creatures, a matador, an alien and some convincing zombies.

The remaining rubbish was re-bagged for its final trip to the recycling site.

A unit spokesman said: "This was a cracking idea from Beth, Eve, Anna and Liz, and an evening well done.

"It was a good exercise in what can be achieved when desperate, but we're not sure the styles will catch on!"
