20mph limit would be a step back

MAY I add my voice in support of the proposal for a 20mph speed limit throughout Penarth (Penarth Times, January 17). In fact I’d like to see the group go further and suggest a 5mph limit which would surely totally reduce the risk of serious injury to any pedestrian.

Most pedestrians can then overtake car users, jump in between vehicles, cross roads whenever they feel like, and feel safe.

I would like to see the return of the horse and cart though, as those of us who need to be mobile for work need some means of transporting equipment, etc. Luckily, as we are returning to the 19th century, we will all soon work near our homes and do all our shopping at the corner store.

Luckily for me, my wife will be doing the daily shop as she, like all other women, will stay at home and tend to the chores.

Should we also be a little concerned at the speed of some modern bicycles? A mountain bike overtook my car in Penarth the other day at rush-hour. Could GPG propose a ban on any bike that isn’t a penny farthing?
