Discuss the state of nature with us

RECENTLY 25 of the UK's top wildlife conservation groups united in order to produce the 'State of Nature' report.
It is a remarkable piece of work, bringing together a pool of knowledge collated over more than 50 years by scientists and volunteers, looking at the population trends of about 3,000 species of wildlife in the UK, and how they have fared over that time. The results are shocking! Of the species investigated, 60 per cent were in decline, over 30 per cent of these in rapid decline with about 10 per cent on the brink of extinction.
However, there is hope, the report illustrates that targeted conservation has produced inspiring success stories and, with sufficient determination, resources and public support, we can turn the fortunes of our wildlife around.
As Cabinet Member for the Environment and Visible Services I want to ensure that protecting and sustaining the environment is an issue that we think about locally within our communities. Small changes can make a big difference. The Vale of Glamorgan is an area of outstanding beauty and as custodians we need to encourage practices that will support our beautiful landscape and diverse wildlife to secure its future.
Therefore, the Vale of Glamorgan Council has brought together representatives from the RSPB, South and West Wales Wildlife Trust as well as its own Ecology Officers for a thought provoking seminar on this very subject on Thursday, October 10, from 6pm-8pm at the Council Chamber, Civic Offices, Holton Road, Barry, CF63 4RU.
This unique interactive event brings together speakers with a great knowledge of the environment and biodiversity and will allow you the opportunity to put your questions to an expert panel. The event is by invitation only and places are limited so will be offered on a first come first served basis. You can register to attend either by e-mailing email@example.com or by telephoning 01446 709469 by no later than October 4.
I sincerely hope that you are able to join us and look forward to seeing you on the night.
