REPORTS have this week revealed that here in Wales we pay more for our electricity than people in the rest of Britain, and more for our gas than anywhere bar London – and this raises deep concerns.
The inequality of a system that allows prices to be pushed up here in Wales, where we have some of the most deprived areas and poorest communities in Britain, despite producing more electricity than we consume, is nothing short of scandalous.
People across my constituency of Cardiff South and Penarth are telling me that times are tough for them. Monthly bills are going up and people are working harder, but are still struggling to make ends meet. We heard only last week of another big price rise to come from one of the big energy companies - with many local customers - and I have no doubt the others won't be far behind.
People are having to choose between heating and eating. Or sitting in the dark with the lights off. I don’t think that’s in any way acceptable in 21st century Wales.
As readers will know, Labour leader Ed Miliband recently announced that if Labour returns to government in 2015, we will freeze energy bills until the start of 2017. This will save a typical household £120 and an average business £1,800.
But we also know that the situation is already desperate for many people, and so I urge readers to back Ed's petition at www.labour.org.uk/freeze-that-bill
Since David Cameron has been in Downing Street, prices have risen faster than wages in 38 out of 39 months and energy bills have gone up by almost £300. This Tory-Lib Dem government has simply not done enough to stand up to big energy bosses.
It's high time we saw serious action as winter approaches.
