Re: Warden’s fury after yobs trash church graveyard
The young people who damaged the Wakeford grave in St Augustine’s churchyard will not have known, and probably will not care, that this is a War Grave, and as such was marked with a poppy at the beginning of August (photograph taken by Cliff Guy attached).
Reginald Wakeford, who served in the Army and the RAF in WW1 is buried there and his brother Stanley is remembered on the gravestone. The Wakeford brothers died within months of each other in 1918.
As the youngsters involved are unlikely to be reading this, their families might point out to them that without the sacrifice made by these brothers, and thousands of others who died protecting this country during two world wars, they probably would not enjoy the freedoms they have today. These graves, and indeed all graves, should be treated with respect.
